Project overview

Understanding across languages.

SST Universal Translator is a research direction for making written information easier to understand across languages. It explores translation in the context of what a person is reading or trying to do, with room for review and correction.

01 / Context

The problem

A literal translation can lose context, terminology and intent. Switching between pages, documents and separate tools adds friction, especially when a decision depends on the meaning of unfamiliar language.

02 / Method

The SST approach

The research begins with bounded reading and document workflows. Source text, translation choices and uncertainty should remain visible so people can judge whether the result is fit for purpose.

03 / Category

Core capabilities

The scope below describes work being explored and later directions. It does not imply that every capability is available today.

  • Project scope

    Reading assistance

Explore translation of selected text with the surrounding context kept available.

  • Project scope

    Web and document workflows

Investigate permitted page and document translation with clear source attribution.

  • Project scope

    Embedded-browser experience

Investigate translation inside an SST-controlled reading surface, within the permissions and access rules of the source.

  • Project scope

    Pause and resume

Design user-controlled ways to stop and restart translation assistance when a person wants the original content unobstructed.

  • Project scope

    Terminology review

Allow important terms and ambiguous passages to be checked rather than silently flattened.

  • Project scope

    AI-supported interpretation

Explore context-sensitive assistance while keeping source material and uncertainty available for review.

  • Future direction

    Desktop and mobile experiences

Study Windows and Android interfaces after the core reading workflow is validated.

  • Future direction

    Real-time media

Consider live speech or media translation only as a later research direction.

04 / Maturity

Current stage

Research. SST is exploring the product shape and technical constraints. No universal language coverage, real-time performance or production translation service is claimed.

Important legal, medical or financial translations should be checked by an appropriately qualified person.

05 / Horizon

Vision

Translation that helps people act with greater understanding while preserving context, source visibility and human judgment.

Research focus

Questions shaping this direction.

01

Reading first

The first question is how to help someone understand a passage while retaining its source and context. Accuracy must be assessed for the specific material and language pair.

02

Documents and the web

Potential workflows include pages, an embedded-browser reading surface and user-provided documents where access is permitted. The project does not claim unrestricted third-party access or universal format support.

03

A wider platform direction

Android, Windows and real-time media experiences are possibilities to investigate, not available features or performance commitments.

SST ecosystem

Part of a broader technology direction.

Part of Personal & Family Technology, this direction shares an interest in accessible communication with RiAIJi. It is not presented as a deployed integration.
