Project overview

A hypothesis about evolving representations.

CLOS is an experimental, long-horizon SST research hypothesis: can an intelligent system develop and revise useful internal representations as it encounters a changing world? It is a question to investigate, not a claimed breakthrough.

01 / Context

The problem

Systems can perform well on a narrow task while failing to transfer what they learn when conditions change. It remains difficult to explain when an internal model is genuinely useful, adaptable and testable.

02 / Method

The SST approach

CLOS proposes studying how representations form, how abstractions change with experience and how those changes can be measured. Comparisons, failure cases and reproducible experiments would be essential.

03 / Category

Core capabilities

The scope below describes work being explored and later directions. It does not imply that every capability is available today.

  • Project scope

    Representation studies

Examine how a system encodes and revises information about its environment.

  • Project scope

    Abstraction experiments

Test whether learned concepts transfer beyond the conditions in which they formed.

  • Project scope

    Longitudinal evaluation

Observe changes over time rather than relying on a single demonstration.

  • Future direction

    Adaptive architectures

Investigate architectures capable of self-revision under measurable constraints.

04 / Maturity

Current stage

Experimental. CLOS is a research hypothesis and conceptual direction. SST does not claim AGI, consciousness, scientific validation or a production implementation.

05 / Horizon

Vision

A better scientific account of how intelligent systems might develop useful internal models over time, with conclusions governed by evidence.

Research focus

Questions shaping this direction.

01

The research question

Can internal representations evolve in ways that improve understanding and adaptation, and can that improvement be demonstrated rather than assumed?

02

What would count as evidence

Evidence would require defined tasks, baselines, observed failures, repeated experiments and clear limits on interpretation. A compelling visualisation alone would not establish a result.

03

How it relates to the Incubator

CLOS is the hypothesis about evolving representations. SST Incubator is a possible experimental environment for testing hypotheses, including CLOS. They are related but not interchangeable.

SST ecosystem

Part of a broader technology direction.

CLOS sits in Research & Future Systems. It can inform questions tested through SST Incubator, while remaining a separate research hypothesis rather than a platform or product feature.
